School Formal: Couple & Friend Group Photos

Couple and group photos are usually the most requested shots of the night — here's how to get a natural result quickly, even with a long queue behind you.

Couple photos - Angle your bodies slightly toward each other rather than both facing the camera straight-on — it reads as far more natural and connected. - A small gap of genuine closeness (a hand held, an arm around the waist or shoulder) photographs better than standing rigidly side by side. - It's fine to laugh, talk to each other, or not look directly at the camera for a few frames — some of the best formal photos aren't the posed ones.

Group photos - Vary height and depth rather than one flat line — some people standing, some seated or kneeling in front, gives a much more dynamic group shot. - Keep the group compact enough that everyone fits comfortably in frame, but not so tight that faces are hidden behind shoulders. - Nominate one person to help organise the group quickly — with a big friend circle, that alone can save several minutes per photo. - A mix of a fully posed shot and one candid, relaxed frame right after gives you the best of both from the same setup.
