Basketball Photo Day: Team & Action Shot Tips

Basketball photo days usually combine a posed team photo with action shots taken during a game or a short drill — here's how to look your best in both.

Team photos - Wear your full playing kit, including matching socks and shoes — no half-changed kit in team shots. - The team usually lines up in two rows: taller players standing at the back, shorter players seated or kneeling at the front, all holding or resting a hand on a ball. - The captain or team ball usually sits centre-front — check with your coach or photographer where you should stand. - Mouthguards out, caps and jackets off (unless it's part of the uniform) for the main team shot.

Action shots - Follow-through matters more than the shot itself — a photo taken just after release, mid-jump, or on a strong drive to the basket usually looks more dynamic than the exact moment of the shot. - Keep your eyes on the ball or the hoop, not the camera — the best action shots look completely unaware of being photographed. - Defensive stance shots (low, active, hands up) photograph just as well as attacking ones — don't just save your energy for when you have the ball. - If we ask for a re-run of a drill for a cleaner angle, that's normal — it helps us get a sharp, well-framed shot rather than a rushed one.
