Athletics & Cross Country Photo Day Tips

Athletics carnivals cover a lot of ground — track, field and cross country — so action shots vary a lot more than in a single team sport.

Track events - Starting blocks: a low, coiled stance with eyes fixed down the track makes for a much stronger shot than standing at the line. - Baton handoffs: the moment of the exchange, both runners' arms extended, is the classic relay action shot — a clean handoff also just looks better in the photo. - Finish line: leaning slightly forward through the line, rather than upright, both looks stronger and matches good running technique.

Field events - Long and triple jump: mid-air, body extended, is the strongest single frame — the takeoff and landing are far less photogenic than the flight itself. - High jump: the arch over the bar is the hero shot — timing matters, so we'll often shoot a few attempts to get the cleanest frame. - Shot put and discus: full extension at release, rather than the wind-up, reads as the most dynamic moment.

Presentation & team shots - Ribbon or medal presentations: hold the item at chest height, angled slightly toward the camera. - House or team group shots follow the usual rule — tallest at the back, shortest at the front, evenly spaced.
